Jury Citation: This well-crafted project has a fine balance of beautifully articulated enclosed and open spaces. The verandah maintains a connection with the skies and outdoors, establishing a strong dialogue between the inside and outside. The controlled manipulation of scale gives it its definitive character. The materiality of bricks, floor finishes etc. renders a strong cultural definition of the place. In its ritualistic portrayal of life, the project is rooted to a sense of Indianness, though it remains modern in its appeal. This house is seen as a temple, a sacred space. The corridors, courtyard, transitions, light etc all adds to this sacredness of the built – drawing one further to ponder the realms of science, poetry and philosophy.
